Dangerous Semester

  1. Oh, dear! I thought I was being original when I asked for extensions because I broke out in a rash, and another time I had roommate drama... both were true, but the weary look on my professor's face should have clued me in to the fact that she'd heard it all before. I hope she got a laugh out of it at least! You seem to take it well.

Reminds me of a poem we learned when I was in elementary school (I looked it up just now and it seems to have been quite popular in India as well; I guess all the Commonwealth countries used the same syllabus). The full text of it is at this link (http://www.macleans.school.nz/co_curr/writersclub/fav/excuses.htm), but I am excerpting the relevant bit:

    Late again Blenkinsopp?
    What's the excuse this time?
    Not my fault sir.
    Who's fault is it then?
    Grandma's sir.
    Grandma's? What did she do?
    She died sir.
    Died?
    She's seriously dead alright sir.
That makes four grandmothers this term Blenkinsopp
    And all on PE days.
I know. It's very upsetting sir.
How many grandmothers have you got Blenkinsopp?
    Grandmothers sir? None sir.
    You said you had four.
    All dead sir.

  2. Apologies for the mistake in the original text, which I just noticed - whose, not who's! Tsk, tsk. That's what comes of blindly copying and pasting.

  3. What a coincidence, one of my students who has a paper due tomorrow just had his grandpa die. It is indeed a risky time of year for the older generation.

  4. Unfortunately, my students are not creative when it comes to lost/late/missing assignments. How I yearn to hear of a dying or deceased grandparent.
